Whidbey Island is a small community that makes neighbors feel more like family. Many of the Islanders commute to and from the main land to work in the Seattle area. This has helped keep the population low and maintain a rural appeal.
The only significant population increase is that of retirees and 2nd home owners.
Because most of Whidbey Island is forested, game abounds. Large populations of deer, rabbits, fox, coyote, and the majestic bald eagle. No hunting with a rifle is permitted. Grey Whales, and Orcas—the so called Killer Whales—are often seen, in season, along Saratoga Passage. Seals and sea lions are a common daily sight, and even the rarer otter is sometimes sighted along remote beaches.
